THE ZEBULON RECORD \ohime XXV. Number 28 Almost everyone around this town either plays softball at the Wakelon diamond, umpires, or goes to the games as a spectator. If you are interested in saving a little money while helping out the lo cal program, you may get a season pass by contributing ten dollars. You can get these passes from the manager of any of the ten teams, or by seeing Carlton Mitchell or Burt Peoples. Battery A to Fire Carbines in Test At Camp Butner During Weekend Battery A, 113 FA Bn, will leave from the Zebulon National Guard Armory at 9 a. m. tomorrow morn ing for Camp Butner, where the unit will fire carbines on the rifle range for familiarization and rec ord. The men will return early Sunday afternoon. The firing Saturday and Sunday climaxes several weeks of instruc tion on the carbines, supervised by Lt. William Shore, Lt. Philip Pearce, and WOjg Clifford Gil liam. Special Training Last night a special night of training classes was held for the different sections. This was the second training session to be held by the battery. No pay is au thorized for there extra drills, Wakefield VBS Wakefield Baptist Church will hold its Vacation Bible School commencement exercises Sunday morning, June 11, at 11:00. The Bible School has had very good attendance this year and the stu dents are anxious to have all their friends present. The Bible School exercise will be over in time for those present to attend the Union Chapel Home coming. FINALS ARE HELD AT G. C. Dr. Arthur Hollis Edens, presi dent of Duke University, deliver ed the commencement address to 37 graduating seniors at Greens boro College Monday. A large audience witnessed the event. “Too many colleges substitute buildings, number of students, and endowment for integrity, quality of personality, and moral convic tions.” he said as he spoke on “Your College and You.” “The strength of the small college is the conviction shared by faculty, trustees, and students.” He urged students to demand of themselves the optimum of per formance. He termed “deplora ble" the practice of giving *oo much attention to lazy, incompe tent students and not enough to the capable ones. and attendance is on a voluntary basis. The unit is rapidly rounding into shape, Capt. Barrie Davis said. Although the battery will leave Zebulon for Ft. Jackson, S. C., next month without two of its three officers and without First Sergeant Sidney Holmes, the training has progressed until it will be possible to operate at camp without them. Nearly all the drills in June will be combined sections training in preparation for the summer ma neuvers. Hurt in Wreck Mrs. Robert Doyle is in Rex Hospital suffering severe injuries received when she and her hus band overturned in their 1949 Ford coupe to avoid a head-on collision with an approaching car about 2:30 Sunday morning. Mrs. Doyle’s back was broken and a foot in jured in the accident. A. C. Perry, with whom Robert works, said that Robert told him he took to the shoulder in an effort to miss the oncoming vehicle, lost control, and overturned in a to bacco field. Mrs. Doyle is the daughter of Deputy Sheriff C. C. Doane of Wendell. “We expect education to furnish necessary intellectual, moral, so cial, and technical competence to clothe the student for the world,” he continued. A sense of history, the desire to participate in history in the making, the ability to think, an insight into human nature, and spiritual literacy were qualities the college graduate should have gained from his academic career. Following the address, Dr. Lu ther L. Gobbel, president of the college, assisted by Dean of the School of Music Gustav Nelson and Dean of Instruction P. M. Gin nings, conferred degrees. Among those receiving bachelor of arts degrees was Miss Mary Fisher Finch of Zebulon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Finch. Zebulon, N. C., Friday, June 9, 1950 Attendance Mark Set During Week By Baptist VCS The Vacation Church School will be continued at the Baptist church each morning throughout the coming week, the pastor an nounces. The enrollment as of Thursday was 201 and was ex pected to reach 225 by the end of the school. Average attendance is running between 180 and 190. Bible study, church music inter pretation, worship and handwork occupy the major portion of the pupils’ attention. The complete faculty includes: General Officers: Rev. Carlton T. Baptist Services At Baptist services here Sunday Mr. Elwood Perry will sing Neid linger’s “Spirit of God” and the Adult Choir will sing “Heavenly Father” by Katherine Davis. The pastor will use for his sermon topic, “Our Wasted Resources.” The Girls Choir sings for the even ing service and the sermon topic is “The Salt of the Earth.” Misses Jean Robertson and Mary Spivey are visiting in Nor folk, Va. Mrs. C. L. Miller and children of Norfolk, Va., are visiting her mother, Mrs. O. B. Spivey. Misses Joellen Gill and Ruth Brown left Thursday morning for a month’s stay at Camp Dellwood near Waynesville, N. C. Mrs. Ann Harris spent Wednes day and Thursday with her daugh ter, Mrs. Ferd Davis. Jimmie Green is a patient at Rex Hospital suffering from a glandu lar infection. Mr. and Mrs. Pat Farmer spent Tuesday and Wednesday at Caro lina Beach. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Temple and family spent Sunday in Meb ane with her family. Miss Rachel Perry is spending the week in New York with friends. Joseph Temple Is Cub Prize Winner The Cub Scouts of Zebulon held their monthly pack meeting Tues day night at the club house. Jos eph Temple won a prize of a camera and film for having the best bird feeder, the project for the month. In a contest Vaughn Wade won two show tickets. The projects for the coming month are for each cub to make a fly swatter, a towel rack, and a door mat. ZEBULON PERSONAL ITEMS Mr. and Mrs. Howard Massey and Billie are leaving Saturday for a ten days’ visit to Ithaca, N. Y. to visit their son, Howard Mas sey. They will go by Hyattsville, Md., to see their daughter, Mrs. M. T. Ankers, and will be ac companied to Ithaca by the An kers family. Mrs. Theo. B. Davis will teach the study course book, “Give Ye” to the WMU of the Hopkins Chanel Baptist Church tonight at eight o’clock in the home of Mrs. Austin Perry. Copies of the book will be on hand for those who need them. Mrs. Chalmers Temple was hon ored at a surprise birthday party recently at the new home of her son. Wayne Temple. All of her children were pres ent except one. Dinner was ser ved outdoors. Mrs. Temple received many beautiful gifts. Mr. John Pulley suffered a stroke and was taken to the hos pital Thursday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock. Mrs. Minnie Perry of Wendell, Route 2, has returned home from Rex Hospital after having a leg operation. Her condition is fair. Theo. Davis Sons, Publishers Recreation Work Report Is Made By Local Group Pi ogress toward the develop i ment of Zebulon’s first full-scale program of community recreation is reported by Carlton Mitchell, chairman of the Summer Activi ties Committee. Interest in the project has been growing, and Willie B. Hopkins and Ralph Bunn report one-fourth of the amount | needed to support the program has ! now been raised. Mr. Lee Rhodes, Zebulon’s first full-time director of recreation, and Mr. Herbie Appenzeller, who will assist him, will begin draw ing plans next Tuesday for the program which is scheduled to begin June 19. Mr. Rhodes will live at the Teachers’ Dormitory at Wakelon School. A daily program for children and an evening pro gram for both children and adults will be organized. Fidel is Class Meets The Bessie Davis Fidelis Class held its monthly meeting Monday night in the home of Mrs. Clarence Hocutt, with Mrs. W. A. Allman, associate hostess. Mrs. Theo. B. Davis presided Mrs. A. S. Hinton had charge of the devotional. Miss Betsy Pope Simpson made a splendid talk on the part of the U. S. in preserving world peace. Delicious refreshments of sand wiches, pickles, potato chips, cakes and, coca cola were served by the hostesses. Oak Level Services The annual all day service was held at the Oak Level Christian Church, Sunday, June 4, 1950. Lunch was served on the grounds, and even though it rained they were able to eat before the show ers. The Reverend Wallace, pas tor of the church conducted the service and music was furnished by the Oak Level Choir. As usual there was a ceremony at the church cemetery. Mrs. D. C. Pearce attended the graduation exercises of her son William Stanley Pearce at Caro lina from Sunday through Tues day. Miss Lorraine Bridgers return ed Monday from Rex Hospital after undergoing a minor operation on Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Dickerson of Bunn announce the birth of a son, Glenn Martin, on June 4, at Mary Elizabeth Hospital. Mrs. Dickerson is the former Helen Bunn of Zebulon. Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Max Perry, Jr., over the weekend were Mr. and Mrs. Francis Ehart from Linthicum Heights, Md. Mrs. Ehart is the former Lucille Phil lips from Lumberton. Mrs. R. I. Hagwood left Tues day for New York to visit her son and daughter, Clifford Hag wood and Myrtese Coffey and family.
